THE GUN LOBBY PLAYS ITS LATEST TRICK

Many Australian shooters will do almost anything to gain respect for
their shooting activities. They want to overcome their reputation for
carelessness and selfishness. More importantly, they would like to
counter the reputation made for them by their association with
extremist American gun lobby organisations such as the NRA, the SAF,
and the CCRKBA.

A recent book by American author Dr Abigail Kohn titled,
Shooters, tries to show that American shooters own guns so that
they can be true to the American Constitution. She seems to argue that
shooters accept that gun ownership is a duty; a duty to the American
public.

As we see it, Kohn is trying to trick the public into believing that
American shooters are taking the high moral ground by purchasing, and
practicing to use guns. This is a trick and a trick which should be
condemned.

Gun ownership does not enhance the safety or the morality of a
society. On the contrary, it seems more likely that a society steeped
in gun mythology and determined to have them ever-ready for use, is a
society which is morally and philosophically corrupt.Guns breed
feelings of aggression, selfishness and arrogance – these are nothing
to do with the better side of human beings.
